BUILDING
On the site where the Jerònimes convent was located, burned and demolished during the Tragic Week of 1909, and on the initiative of Bishop Joan Laguarda, Josep M. Pericas i Morros is commissioned to build the new Carme church.
The church is made up of three high-rise naves and was originally fitted between buildings, so that the only facade and access were on the eastern side (Bishop Laguarda Street).
Later, and from 1924, the building located to the south is acquired, the church is expanded and a new access is built from the street of Sant Antoni Abat.
Pericas designs a NOUCENTISTA church with a structure supported by high-rise pillars and is complemented by organically shaped toral arches, and former arches that together support blown vaults.
On each side of the naves there are side chapels, which in the case of the eastern ones, allow the structure to be recognized from the outside, from the double-slope roof and the windows of clear Gaudí influence.
For the exterior treatment of the façade, the red brick typical of Central European expressionism is used and that Pericas will not use again in any of his works.
The interior is decorated with the stucco of pillars and arches. The presbytery, on the other hand, and the side chapels have, respectively, their own sgraffito. Originally everything was very exuberant and colorful.

JOSEP MARIA PERICAS I MORROS (Vic, 08.27.1881-Barcelona, 04.01.1966)
As for the conception of the form and treatment of materials within Catalan architecture, his starting point was Antoni Gaudí, whose influence, in the background, was always faithful, although his formal world is in contrast. In his works you can see a medieval influence, especially Romanesque, as well as another from the Viennese school. The consequences of the political Catalanism that our architect shared can be added, something that is manifested in a popular Catalan architecture.
The Church of Carmen, in Barcelona (1911), highlights some figurative and stylistic characters that clearly translate the aesthetic approaches of Noucentisme.
We can mention some works that Josep Maria Pericas made in Barcelona: the Monument to Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer (1912), Casa Pericas (1919), Casa Comellas (1912), the Mental Clinic of Santa Coloma de Gramenet (1917)...
It should be remembered that being as it was born in Vic, our architect has a very important and abundant work in that city. We can mention, for example, the Annita Colomer House (1906), the Bayés House (1907), the Sepulchre of Torras and Bages (1916), the Puig House (1917), the Convent of la Mercè (1928), the Convent of the Josefine Sisters (1928-1930), the New Convent of Santa Clara (1931), the Sant Miquel dels Sants School (1932)...

FAÇADE OF BISBE LAGUARDA STREET
This was the main and unique facade of the initial church. It was located at the end of the temple and on a side.
We can find: two turiferary angels, by the sculptor Joan Borrell Nicolau (1913). In the upper part we find two more angels, which support the coat of arms of Carmen, the work of Josep Maria Camps Arnau (1929).
Both Borrell and Camps Arnau were from the team of sculptors who regularly worked with Josep Maria Pericas.

FAÇADE OF SANT ANTONI ABAT (1929)
This façade is made up of two symmetrical Romanesque-inspired towers, the whole set built with red brick. The main door is a semicircular arch.
Above this main door is a ceramic panel signed by Nolasco Valls and Martí, with a choir singing and playing musical instruments and with a background of floral ornaments. In the center, there are two angels with an attitude of veneration towards the Virgin of Carmen, the work of the sculptor Josep Maria Camps Arnau.
The Coromina workshop was in charge of making the ceramics.
